Sorry for the delay of my post, I couldn't figure out how to post what I had written and it was because either I never got the invite or I deleted it or who knows. So now I'm officially apart of Portrait as Community! Horray!! ha. ok...
We began our last class by talking about Foster's and Benjamin's essays comparing and contrasting them. Michael was very disappointed that most of us didn't read the essay and that those who did read only He and Mark were talking about it. So he wants all of us to read the assignment given to us and to actively engage in the discussion. Then, Michael showed us a video on Tobias Schneebaum called "Keep right of the river: a modern canabalist tale". The film was about a very different viewpoint from what most people would have. Tobias accepted both cultures/communities he visited and even became like them for a while. Even when going on talk shows back in America he did not discredit any community he visited. He always held a neutral perspective on things when talking to interviewers and even challenging them to think differently about things from the other side's perspective. Tobias became like the community of people in New Guinea eating what they ate and having sex like the men in that community did. He said how would you truly know what it is like unless you did everything like them. It would have been an outsiders perspective otherwise. Tobias fell in love with the people in New Guinea and Peru. He never let his personal beliefs, thoughts, or religious faiths get in the way with engaging in each culture. Tobias was always humble and respectful to the communities he lived with.
We need to keep working on our interview of and with a class member of our choice and transcribe it. It needs to be 10 minutes long and we need to take a portrait of that person also. These are due on the 9th of this month. For this upcoming week the individual meetings are going to be held half of the class will meet on Tuesday with Yuki and Michael and the other half on Thursday. For that meeting we need to bring a paragraph explaining our community we are working with and any research and primary source material we have so far. We need to be ready to present on the 11th to the rest of the class.
Sorry again this is a little late.
Better late than never.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jaclyn.
