Mission Statements

Please put mission statements as comments that way they are all in one spot. Looking forward to see what everyone comes up with.

  1. The goal in the class for everyone is to create a safe and encouraging atmosphere to help one another further develop and grow. To cooperatively manage one another by freely sharing Ideas, Opinions, Remarks, and Thoughts by directing them down the path that is needed most. Another source for guidance is to provide resources for each other when having trouble clarifying and/or pursuing interests. By being classmates and helping one another we create a support system that is not about creating limits , restrictions, or make one better than the other, but to healthily challenge one another to strive for better without complications interfering. As a classroom and classmates we are a community ourselves to work together for each other.

  2. While I aspire to achieve, and understand the importance of fostering and facilitating a place and environment that is empowering, I believe that a challenging and healthy democracy (which I am not assuming, as a class, we want) without any conflict is improbable, if not impossible. Guidelines allow for individuals to be held accountable and challenged in healthy and recursively educational ways.

The wonderful Ms. Bishop...speaking on Santiago Sierra's inherently antagonistic work.

"Conflict, division, and instability, then, do not ruin the democratic public sphere; they are conditions of its existence…A fully functioning democratic society is not one in which all antagonisms have disappeared, but one in which new political frontiers are constantly being drawn and brought into debate—in other words, a democratic society is one in which relations of conflict are sustained, not erased."
    — Claire Bishop

  3. potential thoughts on how the process, form and function of our individual projects for this class will help steer, or at least begin to reveal, our individual visions for ideal communities, interaction, etc...

"The best I can hope for is to relate a set of experiences that move us in a direction of understanding each other better, understanding social systems better, thinking about new ways to make art."

  4. Our role in an out of this class is to be the best we can be to each other and for ourselves. Encouraging each other to work hard and push when you think you've hit a wall, as well as giving constructive criticisms are really important. The thing that's going to make this work above and beyond how our other classes work is our individual roles within our community. We all will have our specialties but acting in an uncompetitive nature will allow us to form a safety net where we as individuals can thrive. Each of us brings something different to the table that can help us all grow on our own and as a whole.

  5. We as a community will help each other in times of need. We will serve each other to the best of our abilities. We will lookout for one another in all ways possible. We will be truthful with one another, but always acting in a constructive manner. We will be kind to each other to continue building a positive learning environment. We will also do all of these things to every community we come in contact with because we realize they are helping our community open our eyes to a greater understanding of what different communities have in common. Lastly, we will do all of these things in order to promote creativity and ingenuity and to enable each other to grow as people and become better artists.

  6. These are good, but where is everyone else?

  7. As a community we should become a stepping stool towards each individual where our goal is to build one another up. We should look to each others as mentors, and not as a competition, where we are all working together to become stronger artist and teachers. We should be honest towards one another, and no critiques should be taken as personal attacks, but as honest feedback and personal reviews. We should look at our community as a collaborative effort where we can all become part of each others journey.

  8. Our class mission is to create a safe, but challenging environment to encourage the growth of each other's community projects. We will challenge each other's ideas and approach in their best interest and for the best interest if their respective communities. During class time we will be constantly considering the way each person works, both in the way they interact with the class (in and out) and their process for creating work. Those who are more verbally reserved will not have their ideas ignored, rather we will encourage them to share them in whatever way is more comfortable for the individual (one on one critique, writing, etc) in order to ensure that each person is getting appropriate and necessary feedback.

  9. Our mission, as a class, is to foster an inspiring and motivating educational environment which seeks to empower each student, as well as the communities they are documenting. Respect for one another must be established through healthy critique and evolving dialogues on each person's work, as well as their ideas and the specific talents they offer to the group. Regular communication should exist beyond the walls of the classroom, as each student's skills and knowledge should be utilized in the development of our own personal projects.

  10. our goal as a class should be to work together as a community to bring about the creation of art and documentation of other communities. It should be a place where ideas are discussed at grown collectively and where we everyones skillset is developed and refined through practice, critique, advice, and training.

  11. My vision is an environment where we are all simultaneously experts and students. Open to learning from each other, but willing and wanting to share our wonderfully unique and equally valid visions and experiences with the class in whatever ways we see fit. While I hope we all challenge ourselves to engage in a critical discourse about our work's process, "product," and presentation, I hope we can find the time and strength to listen and learn, giving everyone the space for expression.

Creative instigators (troublemaking through empowerment!)...is a phrase and idea that has been running through my brain recently...what I most hope my work and life will reflect and facilitate.

  12. Our community should be supportive and help each member grow and learn from each other. We should support each other’s projects and offer helpful and truthful critique and not be afraid to say something if anything becomes problematic. We should not force anyone to do something that they aren’t comfortable doing but should help each other improve our skills.
In approaching other communities we should consider how to help their community and think with an anti-colonial, anti-racist, non-judgmental viewpoint.
